4 Tips to Nail The Most Lucrative Freight Loads

A man gets into his truck

One of the benefits of being an owner operator is the freedom to choose the types of loads that you want to haul. And, there’s so much to choose from!

From oversized cargo to medicine, there’s plenty of work to go around. The key is finding the best paying loads in the bunch, and that can get overwhelming for truckers on the go.

In this post, I’ll share 4 essential tips that can help you save time and make the smartest choice when it comes to high paying loads.

1. Know your ideal client

What are you looking for in a client? Having a set ideal in mind can help you pick and choose for your benefit. It also helps you establish long lasting business partnerships with companies that align with your standards.

Ask yourself these questions…

  • Do they pay well and on time?
  • Is it a larger, established business with a proven track record?
  • Do they hand out loads frequently?
  • Do the shipments match the lanes you prefer?

2. Don’t rely solely on load boards

Load Boards are a great tool for owner operators that are just starting out, but it’s not a good idea to rely on them as your sole source of work as time goes on. They’re known for offering a multitude of low paying jobs, making it difficult (and competitive) to seek out the lucrative offers.

3. Consult industry associations & local chapters

To find the hidden gems, you have to think outside the box. For trucking, it’s no different. Steer away from the popular industries and look elsewhere for industries in need of your services (there are plenty!) From retailers to luxury cars, you can find loads to haul that don’t only pay well, but allow you to network within an industry that is of interest to you.

4. Move freight for the US government

The US government always has a steady flow of work and pay. It’s definitely a stable and lucrative job, and you could be moving anything, from mail to military equipment. Bear in mind that government loads are difficult to acquire, and some require special clearances, but if you take initiative and go through the process, it’s a top tier client that’s worth the extra push.
