On May 23, 2022, local, state, federal leaders, JAXPORT, and the US Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District celebrated the completion of the Jacksonville Harbor Deepening Project.

The 11 miles of federal shipping channel through JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal now reaches a depth of 47 ft, along with a new turning basin that makes it possible for larger ships to carry more cargo and safely turn around Blount Island berths. As well, ships can now call Blount Island from destinations around the world.

“Florida, with her 14 ports around the state, continues to lead the way for maritime transportation and I’m grateful for the hard work and investment in this project, which will only create more opportunities to strengthen our supply chain and make the Sunshine State a top gateway to domestic and international destinations, “ stated Congresswoman Kat Cammack in a JAXPORT press release.

The JAXORT Harbor Deepening project began almost two decades ago, finishing three years ahead of schedule. Total funding for the project to date is $420 million, made possible by a public-private partnership between the State of Florida, the federal government, JAXPORT, the City of Jacksonville, and SSA Atlantic.

The goal of the project was to build the “port of the future” and for Florida residents, that certainly rings true. It creates or protects 15,000 supply chain jobs, which includes the trucking, distribution, and warehousing sectors.

“Florida’s seaports are economic drivers for our state and serve as gateways to domestic and international markets,” said Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E in a press release by JAXPORT. “Through FDOT’s strategic investments, our seaports continue to expand and modernize to meet the needs of Florida’s growing economy and communities. The JAXPORT Harbor Deepening Project communicates to the world that Florida is open for business and demonstrates Florida’s unwavering commitment to strengthen and grow supply chains while providing a safe, resilient, competitive, and dynamic multimodal transportation system.”
