Healthy Dietary Choices For Truck Drivers

Vegetables versus junk food

Life on the road takes a huge toll on a truck driver’s health. From sitting still for long hours, sacrificing sleep to make delivery deadlines and grabbing a comforting cheeseburger (or 2) at a truck stop, the pounds can pack on quickly.

It’s detrimental for truckers to take care of their weight when on the road. This starts with making smart meal choices.

Here’s how to do it!

Make a plan

If there’s a will, there’s a way! Make a conscious decision to change your eating habits when you’re driving your truck. It can be tempting to just grab a bag of chips and head out the door or be persuaded by fast food. Eating healthy doesn’t happen overnight, you need to make a plan.

Studies suggest that eating 5 small meals each day is the best way to stay full, satisfied and keep that metabolism working.

Meal prep

Ditch the snacks with empty calories and opt for nutrient dense options instead. Invest in a cooler and stock up on home prepared snacks before hitting the road. Here are some great options for truckers:

  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Fruits
  • Veggies
  • Toast with nut butter
  • Nuts
  • Cheese sticks

Choose meals that are high in fiber and protein. Lay off the creamy salad dressings and heavy sauces.

Drink water

This is one of the best ways to improve overall health, cleanse the body of impurities and stimulate metabolism. Invest in an eco friendly BPA free water bottle and keep it by your side. Ditch those TERRIBLE energy drinks and fuel up on good ol' H2O instead. Adults need to consume 8 cups or 2 liters of water per day.

Smoothie up

Smoothies are a fast and tasty way to get a healthy meal in when you’re on a time crunch. Invest in a battery powered blender and stock up on vegetables, fruits, and supplemental powders (such as green powder or protein powder). You’ll be able to make a quick drink on the road, no matter where you are!
